Tamra the Island: Episode 02

Funny and sweet. The characters are lively and the scenery continues to be gorgeous; the island setting and time period give this drama a bright dash of whimsy.
Like with Episode 1, there are still some rough patches, but on the whole I got a kick out of this episode. Seo Woo is not only bubbly and cute, she also shows some emotional layers and an ability to traverse the gamut of emotions at the drop of a hat. There’s also something quite sweet and innocent about her relationship to William as Beo-jin continues to take care of him.

As you can tell from the image up top, Kyu is the winner in the race to the chamber pot. (Since this is how the episode opens, I figured the image doesn’t count as a spoiler).
Kyu wins the race uncontested, because at the last minute the old man (who warned Beo-jin that foreigners get killed) grabs William out of the way, for his own safety. It’s best he remain out of sight to avoid trouble.

Tamra the Island: Episode 01

Right away, the storybook motif clues us in to the light, cutesy tone of this drama. The narration gives us the year — 1640 — and a basic explanation of the colonial atmosphere of the times, and the European fascination with the Orient.
William, a young Englishman (played by Hwang Chan-bin, the stage name for French model Pierre Deporte), is one of those people with a deep interest in all things Oriental. This translates into a room full of mostly Japanese pottery, artwork, and random knickknacks.

I guess you could see William as an early otaku; if he were born in today’s age, he’d be your typical Japanophile — you know, the kind of person with a fascination in anything Japanese merely for the sake of it being Japanese.
Today, he is transfixed by a peculiar bowl, which a mystic assures him is full of magical energy… while a little cartoon drawing demystifies its purpose for us: It’s a chamber pot.

Story

Bae Byeong-woo (Ryoo Seung-beom) sells life insurances and one day he is promoted. When one of his clients invites him to a meeting he is asked by him if the insurance company would also pay the money in case of a suicide. Byeong-woo tells him that this isn't the case, yet the man dies shortly after the talk. The insurance company needs to pay since the man was drunk but the police believes this to be a suicide and also questions Byeong-woo. But that isn't the only problem of the insurance salesman, because now he remembers that an old colleague of his, Oh Sang-yeol (Park Cheol-min), found him a few clients about 23 months ago who all had a history of suicide attempts and therefore actually shouldn't have been allowed to sign a life insurance contract. Because of a stipulation in the contract the money is also paid in case of a suicide if the client pays his monthly fee for two years always on time. Should the single mother Choi (Jeong Seon-kyeong), the poor singer So-yeon (Younha) and the homeless Young-taek (Im Joo-hwan) commit suicide Byeong-woo would lose his job. So he needs to meddle in their affairs and try to find a reason for them to live. By doing so Byeong-woo is about to lose his head, too...
