Introduction
In a faraway land, where snow lies everywhere like a winter wonderland, lives the Snow Queen. She is the most beautiful being in the world, yet she is the loneliest. She lives with the iciness, breathing it with her every breath, and one day when she couldn't stand being alone anymore, she stole Kay and brought him to live with her. What was loneliness, bloomed into love.Plot
Han Tae Woong (Hyun Bin) comes from a poor, single parent family. His mother sells noodles in a roadside stall and he helps her out whenever he can. One thing sets him apart from everyone else though, his knack with Math. This is what got him a place in the exclusive smart school, which accepts the cream of the crop from all over Korea. This is where the boy genius, Kim Jung Gyu studies as well, setting the start of this drama. Kim Jung Gyu feels threatened by Tae Woong when he provides the class with a solution to the trick question set by the teacher, and from then on he tries to make Tae Woong's life a living hell. He challenges his every answer and method and basically tries to go all out to beat him at everything. One day, Jung Gyu notices that Tae Woong's assignment is exactly the same as an answer he found in a dissertation paper, and reports him for plagiarism. His teachers and his mother wrongfully believe that he cheated, causing him to run away from everyone.
It is here that he receives a call from a young girl, someone he had earlier met at a library. She first caught his eye by being stubborn and obnoxious, and then he saves her from some other girl bullies. She leaves her beeper with him as payment for giving her cab fare. He rushes to the airport to meet her, only to find out that she is trying to purchase a ticket to Lapland. They run away together, and spend one day with each other, possibly the best day in both their lives. At the end of their little adventure, he tells her to go home and the last thing that she says to him before leaving is that he still hasn't asked her for her name. He watches her leave with a smile on his face.
He goes back home as well, to find out that there has been a huge mistake. The dissertation which Jung Gyu has accused him of copying had a misprint, whereas his was the complete solution. Realising his mistake, Jung Gyu looks for Tae Woong, and an incident involving loan sharks pulls the both of them into a strong friendship. They quickly became best friends, sharing their secrets, hopes and dreams. Jung Guy tells Tae Woong of his dream of winning a Nobel prize, and of his love for boxing, his idol being the legendary boxer Kim Deuk Gu. He also tells Tae Woong about a girl that he wants him to meet, saying that she's a real catch. With this, Tae Woong smiles, thinking about the girl that he met at the library.
Tae Woong then searches for the book “The Snow Queen” as the girl he met told him that that was her favourite book, and that she has always wanted to buy another copy of that book as it holds the memory of her mother. He finds it at a second hand bookstore, and proceeds to ask her out on Saturday, saying that when they meet, she has to tell him her name.
A few days later, Jung Gyu and Tae Woong await the results of the Olimpiad competition. The school is greeted with a huge group of reporters, and everyone thinks that Jung Gyu won the competition, him being the boy genius and all. Then the news that Tae Woong is the winner breaks out, stunning Jung Gyu. Unable to accept the fact that he lost to Tae Woong, he fights with Tae Woong, hurting each other with painful words. Tae Woong leaves feeling miserable, and goes off to buy a pair of boxing gloves to make amends with Jung Gyu. Little does he know that Jung Gyu committed suicide, succumbing to the pressure he felt from all sides.
Fast forward eight years later, and we see a different Tae Woong. Caught up in the sorrow of his friend's demise, he lives a solitary life. He changed his name to Han Deuk Gu, stopped his studies, and has become a boxer, living the dream that Jung Gyu had. He wanders around, thinking of the past, and of the girl that he once met. He never met her at the theme park, and till this day he doesn't know her name.
He goes to the hospital to visit a friend, when he overhears a girl threatening to kill herself. Stopping her, he tells her that if she really wanted to die she should cut the vital arteries and not her wrist. She looks at him in disbelief as he walks away, and pulls herself together. She is Kim Bo Ra (Sung Yu Ri), the daughter of a rich businessman and a victim of a disease, one that leaves her feeling helpless and angry. She vents her frustrations on the people around her, coming off as being unlikeable and arrogant. She is also the little girl that once appeared in Tae Woong's life. Will they ever find out the truth about their identities? And will past shadows cross their paths creating hurdles in their search for love?
Characters
Hyun Bin as Han Tae-ung (Han Deuk-gu)
Tae-ung is a genius who loves math. In high school, his friend Jeong-gyu kills himself, and Tae-ung, thinking he is to blame, is wracked with despair. He runs away, and when he returns home, he finds that his mother has left. For the next eight years, he lives by the name of Deuk-gu, who was Jeong-gyu's favorite boxer. A high school dropout making a living as a sparring partner in a third-rate boxing club, Tae-ung is a 25-year old man with no hopes or dreams, other than to find his mother again. As he lives a life of desperation, which he believes is the only way to expunge the guilt over his friend Jeong-gyu, he meets Bo-ra and finds himself wanting to be happy again. His outstanding intelligence, kind heart, and perseverance trigger the maternal instinct in women who know him well.
Sung Yu Ri as Kim Bo Ra
Thanks to a wealthy father and great looks, Bo-ra seems to have everything. But since her mother died when she was six, she has always felt lonely. Her father is always away on business, and myasthenia gravis, which she contracted in childhood, limits her abilities. Still, she has managed to survive to the age of 22. Her illness and family environment have affected her personality, and she guards her feelings by maintaining a cold demeanor. Although she has a habit of behaving badly and disrespecting others, men follow her as if she were a queen. However, she is intrigued by Han Deuk-gu, which her tricks don't work on him. She actually has a warm heart and is hurt easily, which is why she fears revealing her feelings.
Im Ju Hwan as Suh Gun Woo
As the youngest child of two doctors, Gun Woo also becomes a doctor. At age 29, he is a good-looking surgeon who works in a general hospital. He has rarely experienced any hardships in life, so he has a confident and friendly attitude. With his looks and good manners, he is popular with women, but not at all interested in marriage. One day, he meets Bo Ra for a blind date arranged by his parents, and falls in love with her at first sight. After that, he feels that becoming a doctor was his destiny, and he wants to protect and take care of her.
He is aware that Bo Ra has always held the candle for her first love but was always confident that one day he would win her over. This is the first time I have ever seen him acting and I am deeply impressed with his performance. Compared to so many new faces out there, he was able to carry his role well and was overall very convincing in his acting.
Yoo In Young as Lee Seung Ri
The 22-year-old daughter of Lee Dong-sul who owns and manages Seung-ri Boxing Club, Seung-ri works as a diet consultant and boxing trainer at the club. She is rather tomboyish with an easy-going character that is both affectionate and emotional. Since she was a child, she has liked Deuk-gu in more than just a brotherly way. Nonetheless, when she learns that he loves Bo Ra and only sees her as a sister, she has the depth of character to wish both of them happiness.
She was rather good as well, and I was quite impressed with her acting. She is a new face for me as well, and I would like to see her in other roles.
Lee Sun Ho as Kim Jung Gyu
Although he made a short appearance in this drama, his role was a pivotal one as it determined the lives and destiny of the main characters. He was a rather convincing arrogant boy genius, although in comparison with Hyun Bin and Sung Yu Ri, his performance fell short somewhat. I am interested in watching his other dramas though, and maybe be able to be a better judge of his acting when I've seen more of it.
Chun Ho Jin as Bo Ra's father
I have to say, this guy is a perfect villain! I hated him to bits in Goong S, and he was such a pain to watch in the beginning of the drama! Then when the story unfolds, you understand his pain and suffering, and your heart goes out to him too. He plays a misunderstood father, one that longs to reach out to his children, but just doesn't know how to and his failure to express his love for them eats him up from inside.
Overalls
This drama was rather clichéd, almost to the point of being extremely predictable. But the cast was so excellent that it kept me hooked on anyways, regardless of the typical script. I loved the fact that all the characters were so vividly brought forward, and the emotions that they exuded just made me feel as though it had come to life. A great drama for everyone out there who wants 16 episodes worth of laughter, tears and emotions. Just remember to prepare a HUGE stack of tissues and a hot cup of tea when you start watching.
