Interview - Im Joo Hwan: I Grew Up Together With Gong Joon Soo (20131210)

“It feels like I just debuted. People gradually know more about me.
Twenty minutes before the start of the interview, I received a phone-call. It was actor Im Joo Hwan who already arrived at the location we had arranged for. Before meeting him,  the image of a ‘sincere, rising star’ and other pleasant images arose in my mind. Having accepted interview after interview for the whole week he must’ve been tired, but Im Joo Hwan appeared without any signs of tiredness and carried a joyful smile instead.

Isn’t this person Korea’s “Ivan the Fool?”
In the recently ended SBS drama ‘Ugly Alert, Im Joo Hwan takes on the character of Gong Joon Soo who can be described as someone like ‘Ivan’ in Leo Tolstoy’s short story “Ivan the Fool”.  Amongst the many makjang daily dramas out there, ‘Ugly Alert’ stood out alone as a ‘nice drama’ and the character Gong Joon Soo remained true to himself from start to finish. Like Ivan, in “Ivan the Fool” who is optimistic in everything he does, Joon Soo turned out to be just the same.

Interview - Im Joo Hwan: “Both ‘Ugly Alert’ And ‘Princess Aurora’ Had Their Own Strengths”

Actor Im Joo Hwan chose SBS’s daily drama ‘Ugly Alert’ as his comeback project after getting discharged from the army and as an actor, he gained a significant amount of experience from it. Meanwhile, from not being able to land a lead role, to eventually leading the drama, to filming under the ‘live-shoot’ system compared to a pre filmed production, he was able to safely complete filming.  Shin PD’s continuous support also gave him great strength.
However Im Joo Hwan said “After the show ended, I still couldn’t relax.”
Seeing how he has successfully completed such arduous filming, it seems as if he will be able easily handle any circumstance in his future projects.
On the morning of this month on the 6th, we met up with Im Joo Hwan who shared a lot about ‘Ugly Alert’.

“<Ugly Alert>’s Gong Joon Soo was a really selfish character.”
SBS’s daily drama <Ugly Alert> ended happily with 133 episodes and the curtain has finally come down. Im Joo Hwan sat down face to face with the reporter whilst carrying a genial smile. Even though the drama ran on a tiring schedule, he appeared with a bright image.
For around 7 months, Im Joo Hwan lived as Gong Joon Soo, the ‘nice guy’. As his nice character was the lead of the drama, it held an unusual meaning for him. To the ending of the drama, he shared his thoughts. “As it ended well, I feel satisfied and happy but there’s also this bitter feeling. I still have things to say and feelings to express such as  “did I miss anything?’ ‘did I lack at anything?” and other feelings.”

SBS’s daily drama <Ugly Alert> (Writer Jung Ji Woo, Director Shin Yoon Sub & Min Yeon Hong) which ended last month on the 29th, was stuck in between MBC’s “Princess Aurora” and KBS2’s “Ruby’s Ring”, dramas with the more conventional makjang elements, but stood out to rise as a ‘nice drama’. Although there were no  ‘exciting elements’ (aka: typical makjang elements), the message of forgiveness and reconciliation was shown. The drama’s main character ‘Gong Joon Soo’ who was played by Im Joo Hwan is here today.

[Picture caption] : “While my previous projects can be said to have ‘strengthened’ my foundation, through”Ugly Alert’ it is as if I have raised several “pillars” and I feel good about that.
“If I were to say that my acting career started when I followed my friend and entered the drama club in high school, then ‘Ugly Alert’ would be my second starting point.”  That’s because I learnt altogether what the heart, love and family meant to someone. Through this drama, I grew as a person.”

Bucket List - STAR’S TALK “My Plan”

★Question
1. If they made any plans in 2013.
2.  If they had plans  in 2013 that they couldn’t achieve and feel regretful about.
3. “These are my 2014 New Years resolutions that I will definitely fulfill”
 ★임주환
1. After getting discharged, my goal was to quickly find a project to do and I had the chance to star in <Ugly Alert> , so to some extent my plan was achieved. In exchange though, I didn’t have any personal time. Now that I don’t have any wishes to fulfill, I’m going to be sleeping (laughs). Because I know that time’s nearly up, my goals for  2013 probably won’t be achieved.

A tall stature with a handsome appearance, but honest as well. This was my first impression of actor Im Joo Hwan. He holds a clear self-view and that self-view is honest. This could have been the influence of ‘Ugly Alert’s’ ‘Gong Joon Soo.

The superheros of this era are those who, while do their best at what they’re given,  are also people who silently walk on their own path. In that sense, aren’t our fathers  truly the greatest superheroes then?

Interview - Ugly Alert - Another translation of the interview [Jung Suk Hee Column] "Met With ‘Ugly Alert’ Joon Soo & Do Hee"

Because of Gong Joon Soo, I have cried so much. Joon Soo is a boy who hold dear to the principle that ‘his family’s happiness is own happiness’ has lost his dad (Ahn Nae Sang) on one morning, and even followed by losing his dearest angel-like stepmother Shin Ae Ra) and he particularly blamed himself for his stepmother’s death and the pitiful way he has been carrying the guilt he felt while living his life, made me cried and cried. Why the world is being more cruel to a very good man like Joon Soo; the one who has practically raised the youngest sister Na Ri (Sul Hyun) by carrying her on his back while earning money for the family, and the biggest sacrifice he had done was when he covered his younger brother Hyun Suk (Choi Tae Joon) who have committed a murder by mistake and he served in prison on his brother’s stead for the crime. Was it because he couldn’t bear to hear people say that his brother is a murderer? Then after ten years, he was released on paroled. That day he stared vacantly at the house of his younger brother & sisters who had cut all ties with him and cried his sore and hurted heart out. Like a lie, good fortune suddenly came to him; the one who’s awfully had no luck. After he met his destined lover Na Do Hee (Kang Sora) and even reconciled with his siblings dramatically, now it’s the time for him to have the happiness he deserved. However, there are still much more difficulties to be solved and endured by him. To free himself from being called a killer and also to deal with the fact that his first love Yoo Jung Yeon (Yoon Son Ha) is now Na Do Hee’s stepmother. Could these two people go through this obstacle? I’ve met with Joon Soo and Do Hee for an interview.

Interview - Im Juhwan: I am Park Kyu

image
I am a die-hard fan of Tamra, the Island. Despite its low ratings, it’s quite popular within the mania group. Do you feel it [the popularity]?

I’m aware of it (smile). Lately, fans have been visiting the filming location every day. There are people who bring lots of yummy food and also people who always watch us and cheer for us.

There have recently been some movements of fans in opposition to cutting Tamra short. How do you feel about the decision to shorten the drama?

I was really impressed with the fans because these are the kinds of things that one might consider doing but wouldn’t easily venture into doing.

Fortunately, we’ve already filmed about 70% in advance and we’re currently filming the scenes toward the end while the episodes are airing, so regardless of whether it ends up being 16 or 20 episodes, the ending will not be ruined. It’s only a matter of how packed the flow will appear to be. I think many people are worried that it will mess up the story. I feel sad that the stories in the latter part will be reduced, but what can we do. MBC probably has its own reason.

Interview - Im Joo-hwan is one to watch in 2010

What a great year for Im Joo-hwan — he had roles in films like 2008′s Doremifasolatidoand Frozen Flower, but 2009 was his year to shine. Although it was a short part, any exposure in Boys Before Flowers was enough to create a buzz, as he got when he appeared a few brief times as Kim Bum‘s older brother. But it was the quirky, heartwarming and funny Little Drama That Could, Tamra the Island, that cemented his status as a rising star.
