Im Joo-hwan released from military service
Im Joo-hwan is back! Granted he’s not in a new project just yet, but he has just completed his two-year service in the military. He was discharged on February 16, after having enlisted in May 2011, and is now back among our civilian ranks.

If you don’t remember much about Im Joo-hwan, it’s probably because he had a bit of a late start in his career and was just hitting his stride when army duty called. He had some minor roles in earlier dramas (A Love to Kill in 2005, Snow Queen in 2006), then acted in the 2008 ero-sageuk Frozen Flower. He played Kim Bum’s hyung in Boys Before Flowers the next year, and then really made his presence known (sorta) with 2009′s quirky comedic sageuk Tamra the Island.

Im Joo Hwan in HIM Magazine and Prepares for His Discharge this Week

While he may not be an A-lister in Korea, he’ll forever have my love and goodwill after Im Joo Hwan delivered a career-making performance as the exiled Joseon nobleman Park Kyu in the underrated Tamra the Island. It’s weird how I’ve watched so many In Joo Hwan performances because I was checking out the movie or drama for someone else, and he always makes me sit up and notice him. In Snow Queen, despite scruffy math genuis-turned-boxer Hyun Bin brooding his way into redefining sexiness all-around, Im Joo Hwan held his own as a prickly doctor who was smart and decent. He was also one of the many flower boy warriors in A Frozen Flower. He’s been off serving in the military for the past two years, leaving even before his finished drama What’s Up started airing. He has such a baby face I was surprised he was close to the age limit for service. Im Joo Hwan gets released this week on the 16th of February and I’ve got my eyes firmly focused on his next steps. Will Korea give this talented guy a break with the right project? I think he’s phenomenal in sageuks and I wish he got released earlier and could have joined either Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love, or even the fantasy Gu Family Book. There is also the sageuk The Unauthorized Biography of Admiral Lee Soon Shin with Uhm Tae Woong, or even the still planning stages Sword and Flower, which isn’t a sageuk but still a period drama. Not to mention Goddess of Fire Jeongji, about the life of the first female pottery maker in Joseon, which has been courting Moon Geun Young for ages but after she just wrapped Cheongdamdong Alice I doubt she’ll jump back into another drama. I’m getting way to excited to cast this boy in something. To welcome back In Joo Hwan, enjoy some recent pictures of him in HIM Magazine (the official military magazine) posing prettily and hosting a military event.

A cute group photo for army colleagues Rain, Im Joo Hwan, and Kim Jae Wook
Hee. Hee hee hee hee. HOMG laughing my head off forever at the cuteness here. In the army all enlisted men are equal, but clearly some are still prettier than others. The current crop of enlisted Korean actors include some of my favorites like Kim Jae Wook and Im Joo Hwan, so it was to my absolute delight to see the two of them posing for a picture together. A closer look reveals the other two pretty boys sandwiched between them to be none other than Rain and Park Hyo Shin. That's quite a collection of star power on one couch, even if they are all wearing the same army fatigues and sporting the same buzz cut. Notice all four of them have intertwined arms? Yeah, they clearly want to kill us with the cute. All four of these guys are in the Army Entertainment Unit, which most entertainers enlist in since its their professional bread and butter plus relatively lighter on the physical work load. I have no problems with that, though I do get annoyed when I see the government using them for really obvious months to over a year left in their service, so we need to savor this glimpse of them since it's relatively few and far between. I feel like Im Joo Hwan hasn't been in the army that long due to watching What's up? , before remembering that he filmed it before he enlisted and the drama broadcast after he left for military service. Both Kim Jae Wook and Rain had lackluster dramas under their belts right before their enlistment, so hope all three pick great projects whatever it is when they return. Looking good, fellas!

Kim Ji Hoon and Im Joo Hwan Gather to Send off Mithra Jin From Army Service
While discussing the characterization of the yangban du jour Kim Boong Do got me thinking of the perfect yangban to end all perfect yangban’s Park Kyu, which of course led to a desire to rewatchTamra the Island, and then segued into missing Im Joo Hwan who is in the army, and finally a reminder that my beloved Kim Ji Hoon is almost scheduled to be released this Summer. Whew, that was a long sentence. Anyways, recently Mithra Jin of Epik High was released from his military service and to send him off, his army buddies which included Kim Ji Hoon and Im Joo Hwan all gathered for a round of hugs and fare thee wells. I know I shouldn’t be greedy since Lee Jun Ki has been returned to me already, but it doesn’t hurt to pray for the drama gods to return both the adorable Im Joo Hwan and the sizzling Kim Ji Hoon back into my embrace. Have some recent cute pics of them if you miss them as much as I do.

Im Joo Hwan Fails to Make the Cut as IT Agent in Army PR Division
Im Joo Hwan, who recently transferred to the PR division of the Defense Media Agency (DEMA) as an IT agent, revealed that he was passed over in the selection process.
Im added, “I wanted to serve as an IT agent to make myself more useful while serving in the army. I signed up after getting the approval of my parents but ended up not making the cut.”
During the interview, Im also shared his thoughts after joining the army. He revealed, “During our boot camp, I remember eating while sitting down in a single file. Even though we were starving, we had to eat slowly and say ‘Thank you for the food. We are grateful to our country and its citizens who have prepared this food, as well as our brothers-in-arms.’ That was when I came to the realization that I was, indeed, a soldier.”
