This is a tale about a family of 3 that has one son aged in about his late teens, early twenties. While spending some quality time doing some yardwork, the son happens to read a newspaper article about a housemaid that kills her employers with rat poison. As they break for lunch, the mother decides that they will never get a maid and the father declares that the house will never contain rat poison. Famous last words....
Basically, the story goes like this: A young girl from a rural town (Suni) gets off the bus and while sitting with her bag and a potted plant which resembles minature purple orchids, she is met by another young lady and brought to the house where she will become the new maid.
The girl that is bringing Suni to the new place of employment warns her that the young man of the house is off limits (because she has a crush on him herself) but in a short period of time, they become rather friendly towards one another. The young man is listening to Donizetti's, L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love) and Suni immediately takes notice of the beautiful aria playing on the phonograph. A small discussion ensues about the existence of such a potion, but it is finally agreed upon by the two that this elixir would certainly be something that would bind two people together till death......
Shortly thereafter, the two star crossed lovers wind up making love one evening. After a short trip to Busan, the lady of the house enexpectedly returns and divulges that she has become aware of the fact that not only has her husband begun living with the former maid, but that the son has had illicit sex with the current one......not a good period in her life.

Not to dwell too much on the adverse, the mother begins to immerse herself in the planning of the upcoming marriage of her son to some equally socially placed young lady and after the marriage, she will be moving out and Suni is informed that at that time, she will become unemployed.

With only a month to go before the wedding, Suni begins serving tea and soup to the young man which has been laced with a toxin from the leaves of the "nameless purple plant" and a week before the wedding is to occur, he suddenly goes blind. After a brief appearance by the husband, after a prolonged absense, he inquires about the son's health and tells the wife he wants a divorce. This sends her over the edge and she has a stroke. Since Suni is already taking care of the son, the father pays her double to remain and take care of both the son and the mother.

Things start getting really creepy as Suni assumes control of the household and the lives of the inhabitants, thus insuring her place in perpetuity. The only drawback is that the son is really becoming uncomfortable around Suni and wants her to leave. Suni's replacement will be the friend of hers that brought her to the job in the first place. At this time, Suni figures out how to kill the son and mother with lethal doses of poison and simultaneously kill the friend with the same toxin while penning a suicide note for the illiterate maid and framing her for all of the crimes.

Suni plants the "nameless purple plant" in the garden and leaves the house forever, clutching the album of Donizetti's opera to her chest as she wanders the streets in a daze.....
