Im Ju hwan to open official Japanese website

Korean actor Lim Ju-hwan's official Japanese website will open on March 1, according to his agency Yedang Entertainment on Friday.

If you’ll recall, there’s a short (two-episode) special drama starring Im Joo-hwan that is set to air soon, which will precede his full-length drama role in the upcoming What’s Up. It had previously been titled Hyunhaetan Marriage War, where “Hyunhaetan” refers to the strait between Korea and Japan and is a metaphor for the plot that has a Korean man (Im) marrying a Japanese woman (Rie). The drama is set to air over the weekend, but now has a new name: Marriage War of Doenjang-kun and Natto-chan. Doenjang is the Korean word for fermented bean paste, while natto is a similar Japanese type of bean paste (they’re not exactly the same food, but the analogy is clear).

What’s Up completes first round of auditions

The first round of open auditions have been completed for writer Song Ji-nah‘s anticipated new campus drama What’s Up, and a list of the lucky applicants who passed to the next round has been revealed online on the audition webpage. The production still has a ways to go because there were 200 hopefuls who survived the first round; that number was pared down from an overwhelming number of overall aspirants — more than 10,000 showed up and participated.

The drama takes place in the musical department of a university and will begin filming in March. The main cast has already been selected; see initial group photos below.

They are, in order of the photo directly below: musical actor Jo Jung-seok, Hon‘s breakout star Im Joo-eun, Big Bang’s Daesung, Tamra the Island‘s Im Joo-hwan, former child actor Jeon Hye-jin, and model Lee Soo-hyuk.

Im Joo-hwan and Rie in MBC special drama

Tamra the Island‘s Im Joo-hwan has a drama series coming up (campus series What’s Up), but first he’ll be seen in an MBC special drama called Hyunhaetan Marriage War [현해탄 결혼전쟁]. He’ll star with Rie (full name Akiba Rie), a Misuda (Global Talk Show) panelist from Japan.

The story is about a typical Korean man and a Japanese woman who fall in love while working together on a Korea-Japan joint project, but face family opposition to their marriage. Hyunhaetan is the name of the strait between Japan and Korea; hence the title, which is a metaphor for the couple’s struggles.

I think this ought to make a few people happy! Im Joo-hwan is in the February issue of men’s magazine Arena, and he’s looking pretty good.

One article calls the look masculine and even “macho,” but I think he looks more pretty to me. You know, while some fashion mag shoots have interesting concepts (like the “dangerous moment”) or cute ones (Smile’s holiday stars), to be honest most of them elude me. Im Joo-hwan’s falls into that category; he’s supposed to evoke “a fantasy feeling” as a showroom mannequin. O…kay. (I suppose that’s better than the pretty vampire holding saucepans?)

Ju Hwan joins What's up

The main cast now looks complete for What’s Up with the addition of Tamra the Island‘s aristocratic Park Kyu, aka actor Im Ju Hwan, which was previously rumored and is now official.

This means we may expect to see Im show off some singing skills as he takes on the role of a student in a university musical department: the rest of the main cast are Big Bang’sDaesung, Hon‘s possessed girl Im Joo-eun, former child actress Jeon Hye-jin, Kim Min-hee’s model boyfriend Lee Hyuk-soo in his acting debut, and musical actor Jo Jung-seok.

Seo Woo and Im Joo-hwan are reteaming for a new CF, after playing a couple in MBC’s fusion sageuk drama Tamra the Island. The two, who had once been linked in dating gossip, shot the commercial in Sydney, Australia, for a new phone from KT Tech Ever.

The shoot depicts the couple on a date, and as they sit together in a car, they try to build up the nerve to make their move. However, at the moment they attempt the kiss, a sudden tremor shakes the car (which the staff accomplished by lying underneath the car, shaking it directly). The unexpected moment provokes a “shocking fantasy” for the two.

Meanwhile, Im Joo-hwan and Seo Woo were both recently in Japan to promote Tamra the Island with 1,600 fans on December 13.

What a great year for Im Joo-hwan — he had roles in films like 2008′s Doremifasolatidoand Frozen Flower, but 2009 was his year to shine. Although it was a short part, any exposure in Boys Before Flowers was enough to create a buzz, as he got when he appeared a few brief times as Kim Bum‘s older brother. But it was the quirky, heartwarming and funny Little Drama That Could, Tamra the Island, that cemented his status as a rising star.

Actor Im Juhwan was awarded the best newcomer award at the 17th 2009 Republic of Korea Cultural Entertainment Awards show that was held in the afternoon at Yeouido’s 63City National Convention Hall in Seoul on the 30th.

In January 2009, Im Juhwan captured viewers’ interest through the KBS drama, Boys Over Flowers. This past September, he generated much affection through his un-novice like, solid acting as the lead character Park Gyu in the already ended MBC weekend drama, Tamra, The Island.

Good news for Tamra the Island fans: Not only is the mania trendy-sageuk series getting a director’s cut DVD set, it’s been announced that the DVD set will have an extra episode.

The drama had been planned for 20 episodes (and filmed months in advance) before MBC cut it down to 16 episodes due to low ratings despite fan fervor and general praise. That sparked massive fan outcry and an extended campaign first to save the series, then to release a full DVD set with the unaired episodes. The former failed, but the latter was successful. As a result, beginning with Episode 11, the production had to quickly edit down the remaining ten episodes into six, leaving a lot of material on the cutting room floor.

The DVD is good news for fans who felt that emotions changed too quickly in the broadcast version, since a lot of development was omitted for time. In particular, the box set promises to show Park Kyu’s (Im Joo-hwan) management of the port opening and its problems with “much more detailed development.”

In total, it will contain an extra episode’s worth of material from its original plan. Group Eight CEO Song Byung-joon explained on November 10, “After editing the complete series, the DVD came to 21 parts. … The video editing is complete, and now the sound editing is being worked on.” Note that this does not mean there is additional materialafter the series’ end; it means that when the material was re-edited into its originally planned components, they came to an extra hour’s worth.

The DVD set will release in early December. The full series will also be re-broadcast next year on cable television, beginning in March.
